Central Indiana Region is hosting the 1st annual Pole Day at Putnam Park Performance Driver Education event at Putnam Park Road Course in Mt. Meridian, Indiana. Putnam Park was built in 1991 and Central Indiana Region PCA was one of the first groups to utilize the excellent circuit for high performance driver education and club racing events. |
The track is a 1.8-mile long, ten-turn road course with an excellent layout. The entire course can be seen from the pit area. Because the track is relatively flat, has high visibility with plenty of run off room, it makes a terrific place to begin your high performance driving experience. It's great for experienced drivers as well and offers positive and negative camber corners, several high speed corners and a down hill main straight. Putnam Park is 40 miles west of Indianapolis, just off I-70 near Cloverdale. Weather can be turn rapidly this time of year so please come prepared. We are looking forward to a great weekend of performance driving and sharing good times with old and new friends.
Less experienced drivers will have an instructor riding with them on-track until the driver is comfortable with the course and the car. There will be four run groups and an instructor group to better match students of similar abilities in the same session. Run Group A will be for very experienced drivers in higher performance cars. Group B will be for experienced drivers new to Putnam Park or driving medium performance cars. Group C will be for student drivers with some experience and Group D will be for student drivers with little or no experience. There will also be scheduled classroom instruction/discussion sessions to discuss aspects of high performance driving with plenty of time for questions and answers. This is an excellent time to learn more about your car’s capabilities and enhance your driving skills. Join us for a great weekend of “unwipable” smiles and become a better driver on and off the track.
Event headquarters will be the Baymont Inn, 6010 Gateway Drive, Plainfield, IN 46168 (317) 837-9000. A block of rooms at a special Central Indiana Porsche Club rate have been held. Make sure you mention the Central Indiana Porsche Club to get the special rate. Event check-in will be held Friday evening at the Baymont Inn with early technical inspection and registration available. We’ll even provide some finger food for you to snack on while you catch up with old and new friends.

DE Weekend Schedule Now Available
As a student of a PDE event, your classroom and in-car instructors will introduce you to car control techniques that are suited to your experience, your vehicle, current setup (suspension, tires, etc.), venue (track), and current conditions (temperatures, precipitation, etc.). You will learn the ‘rules of the road’ - flag station signals, passing protocols, track entry and exit patterns, and more. You will be taught in a classroom setting, and learn by doing on-track, behind the wheel of your car with your instructor next to you in your passenger seat. You will experience even more when you ride in the passenger seat of your instructor's car. And we will tie it all together with a walking tour of the track, discussing key points as we go; "oh, THAT's why my car does that when I'm driving in this corner . . .".
You will learn just what you and your car can and can’t do at various speeds around a closed circuit road course. You can feel what a small tire pressure adjustment can do to your vehicle’s handling, or the difference of having the balast of a passenger (instructor), or even the change induced by a full gas tank vs a near-empty one. You will be shown how to be ever so smoooooth behind the wheel. And, yes, as you become smoother, you will also become faster.
Want to see how well you stack up against other drivers? Well, PDE is
NOT the place for that! (though, club racing, or scca, or nasa or . . . can be). This is all about you and your car on this track - your car control, recovery skills, drive lines, smoothness with driver inputs, reactions to your car’s responses, adjustments to your car’s setup, and more.

You will finish your time on track with an enhanced understanding of your driving limits and abilities, and your car’s capabilities. You will experience the ultimate stability and thrill of accelerating through a corner (because you slowed enough approaching it). You will develop the ‘Unwipable Smile.' You will have FUN!
One of our CIR PDE students-turned-instructor, and long time driving enthustiast, George Barker, observes, "You will find after leaving the track on Sunday evening, your street driving will dramatically change (the real purpose of PDE); your [street] speed will probably drop a little, you'll be more aware of drivers around you, and better at anticipating their next move, you'll look further ahead, will break properly for corners, [and] will read road and weather conditions better. You will be a safer driver and better prepared when some other #%&! makes a mistake. After all, the whole point of PDE, other than having more fun than you can imagine, is to keep you out of the hospital, and your baby out of the body shop."
You do NOT need to drive a high performance vehicle to benefit from a driving school such as this - although this is a Porsche Club, we don't require that you drive a Porsche at our PDE's. So long as your car is solid, free of leaks and loose parts, and passes inspections, the only other things you'll need are: a valid driving license (full operator or better), a couple completed PDE forms, and an SA rated helmet - oh, and a desire to learn and have some FUN!
Interested in the concept, but not yet sure you are ready to take your car out on the course? Register for our Intro to PDE - you attend the same classroom sessions as the fully registered students, and you still have an on-track instructor, with
you as the passenger (you will NOT be getting behind the wheel of your car - only riding with an authorized instructor). You'll still need to complete the required paperwork (minus the car inspection part) and you'll still need the helmet (rentals available from OG Racing - www.ogracing.com ).
The Central Indiana Region Porsche Club has been hosting PDE events since 1992, at various venues in the area, including Indianapolis Raceway Park and Putnam Park. Whether due to a fantastic instructor pool, or top-down enthusiasm, or most excellent grid work, or terrific committee organization, or fun social activities, or way-cool shirts, or . . . CIR has enjoyed a long string of event sellouts, and even longer waiting lists. With that, our seven year run of 14 events in a row at the 1.75 mile Putnam Park were moved in 2009 to longer tracks, like the 2.5 mile Bluegrass Motorsports Park (room for more students and instructors with the same volunteer effort).
Event-specific information can be found with the links (top left) or on the ‘Events’ link (above) or below. You will also find a comprehensive on-line experience at www.PerformanceDriverEd.net - enjoy!
